We'll be watching this film in class. At the end, be sure to write a brief (just a couple sentences) review in the comment section.

  1. I like how in the film that they portray helvetica as a bold, raw typeface that is evolving in uses. It was intriguing how they said Helvetica was facist, socialistic, AND capitalistic, when those are completely different things. It is true that you can't really stray from the norm all the time, where helvetica captures and dominates all the other fonts. But then again Helvetica isn't pure. You can't really express anything when typing something like txhfcjygukhi. You have to use it the right way, positioning it in the right place.

  2. I never really thought about the fact that Helvetica was used so much in everyday life. Before watching the movie, I just thought it was some generic font that didn't have much of a story. After we watched the movie I was walking down the hallway and noticed that the room numbers were all printed with it. So strange that one font is used in so many places!

  3. I think it's a little scary how so many people use the same font for so many different things. It kind of unifies the world.

  4. I found it very interesting, that Helvetica could be used to express many different feelings, thoughts, emotions etc... The movie showed that Helvetica could express many different things, but you have to use it right. Also I did not know that Helvetica was used in so many signs. For instance, Staples uses Helvetica and they're one of the biggest companies in the U.S. Also the variety of those using Helvetica is huge. It ranges from a store like Staples, all the way to the paper signs in this room.

  5. I thought it was a good movie considering that it was about a font. I never really thought that they could spend 80 minutes talking just about a font. I thought they did that really well.

  6. I thought that this movie was really interesting. I never noticed how often Helvetica is used on signs and in other places. One fact that I found interesting from the movie was that the computer made it easier, but it didn't make it better then doing it by hand.

  7. I thought the movie was very informative and interesting to watch. I did not know that Helvetica was used in so many places, I feel like people see it everywhere but don't really know its there. Watching this movie is going to make me notice Helvetica more in everyday life.

  8. I actually thought of lugging my camera around and photographing signs, etc. that are in helvetica font. I never thought that helvetica was not only the most common font that graphic designers use, but something that was created because early designers needed a font that was classy, yet professional. And it is true-- you DO see helvetica a lot! I liked how the film summarized the story of helvetica and asked numerous graphic designers and typographers about the font, but i think that the movie could have more clearly explained why the font was created and why still today people use it. Otherwise, interesting movie!

  9. Before I saw the movie I never really noticed how Helvetica was used almost everywhere. I guess I just let it slide into the background because I saw it so much. It really is amazing how one font could take over while in the past so many different fonts were being used. Now that I saw the movie, I'm seeing Helvetica every day.

  10. I had not expected such an interesting movie to be about a font. It was surprising how this movie was actually interesting to watch and it intrigued me at how helvetica plays such an important role in fonts. I never had really realized how often this single font has been used in our everyday lives, but now i am more enlightened on the subject.

  12. I've never really thought about the feelings and suggestions that fonts give you, but listening to all of these people talk about the history of Helvetica, and the reasons behind creating it, really put everything about the font into perspective for me. I loved this movie, and thought it was sooo cool!

  17. I thought that my expectation for the movie was pretty far off reality. I didn't know such a interesting story could come from a font, when there are millions of fonts. Now I'm looking out for that font everywhere i see a poster or a advertisment.

  18. Interesting movie. It made me think more about fonts and how important they are in our daily lives even though they are often overlooked and forgotten about. I like the comments from all of the designers and such, especially the guy who spoke about how you need to have your own taste and your own "thing" (in lack of a better word) in order to produce good designs. :)

  20. I agree with sporkage; I was also under the impression that Times New Roman was the font that was most commonly utilized. I think its really interesting, however, that Helvetica is so intertwined with our daily lives. I guess its just a pleasing font to look at.

  23. I never had noticed before that so many brands used the same type of font. It made me think about how much work is actually put into the fonts that are used in everyday life.
