Optional Book Cover Opportunity

From Mr. Guerra: "I’m looking to publish the book electronically so I would want the cover to be resized often. I think you mentioned that Illustrator would be the better program to use. Besides the title, just my name are the only other things I would want on it. This is also the first of a series of books that are planned as well.

Let me know if there is anything else you need. Also let the students know that they can email me or stop by with questions. Thanks."

The Dragon’s Eye book

Background info

Over 500 years ago the land of Fael-wen was ravaged by a great war. The war started when the Empire of Tamath, overcome with greed, formed an alliance with Rhal The God of Death and Darkness . While Tamath spread across the land, followers of Rhal worked to raise him from the Abyss to allow him to be able to rule on land.

While the rest of the land struggled against the Tamath Empire a group of heroes led by Valo, the God of Light, attempted to destroy Rhal. With the help of several magical items, or treasures, they were able to defeat him and send him back into the Abyss, bringing a balance back to Fael-wen. After the war, most of the treasures were lost or hidden, and their stories have turned to legend.

Now, hundreds of years later, one of the treasures, The Dragon’s Eye is about to be discovered and put into the wrong hands. If that happens the fate of Fael-wen could be in jeopardy.

Synopsis

Makayla is a Giadi in training who is well on her way to take the trials, or the tests, to become a full Giadi. The Giadi are druids who have a connection with nature and the land, that act as sort of a liaison between the humans and nature. Makayla has been excelling in her training, however, over the last several weeks she has been getting dreams that are clearly affecting her training. These dreams show her the Dragon’s Eye and its location, however Makayla cannot tell where it is, but she knows that the Eye is in danger. Her teacher, Alis, has been working with Makayla to overcome the dreams and move forward with her training.

When a temple thought to have held the Dragon’s Eye is attacked, the Giadi council requests Makayla’s presence in Whitemoore, the home of the council, so that she may tell them of her dreams. Makayla is told that she will travel to Whitemoore to complete her training and that the council will help with her dreams. The truth is that Makayla is a Keeper, the sole human who has a connection with the Eye, and considered the only one who can truly use it. The Dragon’s Eye gives the user the same abilities and powers as Dragons, but also the ability to heal them. To use the Eye takes a great amount of physical and mental ability and it is rumored that anyone who is not a Keeper, would be killed if they use it. Makayla was born with the ability to use the Eye but it was kept secret from her, and planned to be revealed when she got to the trials. However, the recent attack has moved up the timetable. Concerned for her physical and mental wellbeing it is decided that the truth will be kept from her until she reaches Whitemoore.

Makayla and Alis then travel with Almar, who is captain of the royal guard as well as Bren and Darius two members of the army. Meanwhile two unlikely heroes are about to find themselves caught up in Makayla’s quest as well. Corrin and Kay are two adventurers who have spent the last two weeks on the run. They helped to overthrow a dictator in a city and now find themselves wanted men with a bounty on their heads. After barely escaping capture they hide out in the woods where they soon meet Makayla.

On her third day out Makayla and company are attacked in the early morning hours by unknown assailants. During the attack Darius and Bren are killed and Makayla, Alis and Almar flee to the same woods Corrin and Kay are hiding in. Knowing that they are wanted men, but not wanting to see anyone get killed, Corrin and Kay help Makayla. While Almar is extremely skeptical about these two men who have to lie about why there are really traveling, Alis and Makayla trust them enough and ask that they accompany them to Whitemoore. The two agree and the new unlikely party heads out.

Feeling guilty about keeping Makayla in the dark, Alis reluctantly tells her the truth about her powers and why they are really heading to Whitemoore. After at first being in denial, Makayla realizes the truth, and is angered at Alis and the council for keeping this from her. This fractures Makayla and Alis’ relationship. Unable to take the pressure of her discovery, and feeling that her whole life has been decided for her, Makayla runs away forcing Alis, Almar, Kay and Corrin to go looking for her. After some soul searching and realization, Makayla sees that she can and should continue to Whitemoore and emerges from hiding. During this time, Kay and Alis form a bond to which Kay takes a romantic liking too. Almar and Corrin become more at odds over Almar’s distrust of him. Also Corrin provides some much needed advice to Makayla about life and who she is, even though Corrin does not know of her powers.

It is then discovered that a wizard named Tarlin is the force behind finding the Eye. He has taken great lengths to discover who the Keeper is and have her captured. When the first attack fails, he then sends Dhair, an assassin, and his second in command, to capture Makayla.

Before the group reaches Whitemoore, Corrin and Kay’s secret is revealed leading both Almar and Alis to distrust them. When they reach Whitemoore Corrin and Kay are quickly thanked and then ushered away. Alis is chastised for telling Makayla about her powers before the council could and Makayla then realizes the sacrifice Alis went through by telling her.

Makayla, Alis, and Almar then meet Kaewyn-Lor who is a dragon sent as an ambassador. He reveals to them that there are rumors among the dragons that all the treasures not just the Dragon’s Eye is in danger. Since the Dragon’s Eye was created there has been an uneasy treaty between the dragons and humans. As long as the Keeper controls the Eye the dragons are ok. However, once that alliance is compromised the dragons will attack and destroy the Dragon’s Eye and anything else that may get in the way. The dragons know of the location to the Eye and are preparing to destroy it. Kaewyn-Lor has come to move the process of securing the Eye along. Pressured again by everyone telling her what to do, Makayla leaves the council to clear her head.

While away she is captured by Dhair and after a daring escape with Kay, Corrin and Almar almost rescuing her, Makayla is brought before Tarlin. Using his powers, Tarlin is able to force Makayla to tell him the location of the Eye. He then travels there in order to use her to retrieve it.

Corrin and Kay are told the truth about Makayla and after a short discussion, agree to help get her back. Kaewyn-Lor takes Kay, Corrin, Almar and Alis to the location of the Eye which happens to be an old abandoned dwarf mine. There they fall into a trap by Tarlin and are captured. Knowing Makayla won’t help him unless she has to, Tarlin poisons Alis and informs Makayla that she will receive the antidote to save Alis once he receives the Eye.

Makayla takes Corrin with her as well as Tarlin to find the Eye. After a struggle to focus and find her true potential Makayla realizes that the dreams were giving her the real location of the Eye. Once she finds the Eye and gives it to Tarlin he deceives them and leaves Corrin for dead. Makayla chases after Tarlin where she finds Kay and Almar fighting Dhair and his men. Tarlin and Makayla race outside to see a horde of dragons overhead ready to attack. Meanwhile Dhair sneaks out to kill Makayla only to be confronted by Corrin who tries to stop him.

Holding the Eye, Tarlin screams to the dragons that he is now their master and proves it by nearly killing Kaewyn-Lor. Makayla then verbally attacks Tarlin forcing him to use the Eye’s power even more, knowing that he will not be able to control it. The trick works and Tarlin is decimated by the Eye in a huge blast leaving nothing but a small crater. However the force of the spell leaves Makayla unconscious as she was closest to the blast.

Shaken, Corrin goes to tend to Makayla. Barely awake she informs him that unless the Eye is found the dragons will still attack. Rushing back to where Tarlin once was and after dodging attacks by the dragons Corrin finds the Eye and gives it to Makayla. She then convinces the dragons that there is no danger and they leave.

The story ends with the group sitting in a local tavern while Alis recuperates from her poisoning. Kay plans on staying with her until she’s better while Makayla, with her life now wide open ponders what her next step will be.
